2015 brought us Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Marvels’ Avengers: Age of Ultron and a host of of other fantastic movies. It was a great year for cinema but 2016 is shaping up to be even better. I’ve put together a list of the top 21 movies to see this year – and when I say they’re must-see, I really mean it.
We’ll kick off with one of the most prolific franchises there is right now – Marvel and their vault of superheroes.
2016 Marvel Movies
Ryan Reynolds reprises his role as the humorous Wade Wilson, first played in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, a former Special Forces operative experimented on to leave him with accelerated healing powers. Adopting the anti-hero alter ego Deadpool, Wilson hunts down the man who almost ruined his life.
Deadpool is not just another action flick with superheroes. The dark humour that runs throughout the movie promises to make it a funny affair and Ryan Reynolds’ delivery is, as ever, brilliant. Check out this trailer to see what I mean:
Deadpool is out in February.
Captain America: Civil War
The latest in Marvel’s Captain America series of movies promises to be epic. It appears to split the Avengers into two factions. Cap tries to remain free from government intervention and save his friend Bucky (the Winter Soldier for those of you keeping up!), aided by a one half of the Avengers, while Iron Man and the other half surprisingly support the new regime of accountability and try to bring him down. Civil War erupts!
What could be better than former friends with super powers going head to hand with their factions of other superheroes? I’m very much looking forward to seeing how it turns out, as well as the introduction of a couple of new heroes – your friendly neighbourhood Spiderman and the Black Panther. Awesome.
Captain America: Civil War is out in May.
A whole new comic book hero is introduced by Marvel, namely Doctor Strange. Played by Benedict Cumberbatch, Doctor Strange is a brilliant surgeon whose life is destroyed before he begins to rebuild thanks to a sorcerer who takes him under his wing and teaches him his skills, training him to defend the world from evil.
And that is pretty much all we know as yet! If you’re a Marvel fan and a comic book reader we’re sure you’re going to love it. I know (as a Marvel fan and comic book reader) that I’m pretty much guaranteed to do so!
From the Marvel comics but produced by 20th Century Fox, the latest instalment of the X-Men franchise is set to outdo all the others.
The plot of X-Men: Apocalypse centres around the original mutant, aptly named Apocalypse, immortal and invincible and awake once more. Obviously he doesn’t like what the world has become and sets about destroying it with a band of powerful mutant allies, including Michael Fassbender’s Magneto. And of course, the X-Men – led by James McAvoy’s Professor X and Jennifer Lawrence’s Raven/Mystique – must stop them.
Mutant powers unleash in what is literally a fight to save mankind. It’s a tried and tested formula from the X-Men team but it works each ad every time. Get on it.
May is when you’ll see X-Men: Apocalypse hit our screens.
2016 DC Comics Movies
DC are playing catch up on the Marvel Cinematic Universe but I’ll tell you what…2016 could be the year they do it with two amazing looking movies due for release.
Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice
It makes sense that DC turn to their two biggest names to really begin the assault on Marvel’s dominance. It was maybe a little unexpected for them to pit them against one another though!
Nevertheless we’re going to see one of the most discussed battles ever take place when the Dark Knight (Ben Affleck) goes head to head with Superman (Henry Cavill). What kind of superhero does the world need? A dark vigilante or an unchecked, super powerful being? Doesn’t really matter – as the two trade blows Lex Luthor unleashes Doomsday and the world is under threat once more.
Will Batman and Superman set aside their differences to deal with this new terror? They will if Wonder Woman has anything to do with it. What? Yep…DC’s most famous female character joins the duo in what should be a fantastic movie from DC Comics. I can’t wait! Check out the trailer:
Batman v. Superman is out in March.
DC on resting on their superhero laurels in 2016. Oh no, they also have the much anticipated Suicide Squad to give us. About as anti-hero as you can get, the Suicide Squad is made up of a bunch of incarcerated super villains, recruited by the government to carry out a series of operations in exchange for their freedom. What could possibly go wrong?
This isn’t just another hero action movie though. This one deserves more than an intro. You at least deserve to be introduced to the cast.
First off, Jared Leto plays the Joker. If you were hoping for a similar Joker to Heath Ledger’s fabulous and justly lauded version you might be in luck. Looking at the set photos what you’re getting here is a much crazier, darker and evil Joker, but there are definite similarities. And yet he’s cast in the role of superhero. Should be interesting. DC is keeping Leto’s joker under wraps as much as possible, as you can see from this trailer released at Comic Con:
Will Smith makes a welcome return to the action on the big screen as Deadshot, Margot Robbie plays a sexy, psychotic Harley Quinn, Ben Affleck shows up as Batman, while there are a tonne of other DC bad guys making up the Suicide Squad.
The whole premise of the movie has me excited and I really think you should be too.
Suicide Squad is out in August.
