5 Over The Top American Christmas Commercials

American TV CommercialsLove ‘em or hate ‘em, it’s pretty much impossible to escape Christmas-themed commercials around this time of year. Big companies try’na sell their wares via some kind of Christmas-related message about peace and love? Pah! Everyone knows that American candy is the surest way to bring joy to your family this Christmas. Ahem.

Anyhow, Christmas commercials seem to have got real big in the UK over the past couple of years, with folks waiting for the latest heart-warming John Lewis advert like it’s a movie or something (by the way, you should never wake up a hibernating bear, even if it does kinda look like Winnie The Pooh. Take it from me).

In the States, though, we’ve been doing heart-warming Christmas commercials for decades. Here are 5 that I reckon will get even the Scroogiest of folks into the Christmas spirit!

Hershey’s Kisses – ‘We Wish You A Merry Christmas’

A delicious candy like Hershey’s Kisses sells itself this time of year, but that didn’t stop Hershey from coming up with this iconic commercial that is still running on US TV today – 24 years after it was first released!

The beauty of this commercial lies in its simplicity; take a few Hershey’s Kisses, make a Christmas tree out of them and pretend they are bells playing ‘We Wish You A Merry Christmas’. Christmas magic at it’s finest (and tastiest).

Coca-Cola –  I’d Like To Buy The World A Coke (The Human Christmas Tree)

Say the words ‘Coca Cola’ and ‘Christmas’ to anyone and they’re almost bound to think of those big red trucks rolling through a town while some people chant ‘holidays are coming’.

It’s far from the only iconic Christmas ad Coca Cola have done, however, and this classic from the 70s is arguably even better – even if it does look a little dated now. Preaching a message of unity and goodwill to all dudes and dudettes, people from around the world hold a candle and form a human Christmas tree (noticing a theme here?). Sure, it’s sappy as all heck, but who cares?

Oh, and good luck getting the jingle out of your head today!

Nike – Michael Jordan Schools Santa

There was a time in the 90s when Michael Jordan was literally everywhere. You know that ol’ legend about never being more than 6m away from a rat? In the 90s, you were never more than 5 minutes way from seeing Michael Jordan in some form.

Case in point, this classic ad for Air Jordans, in which Big Mike takes on none other than St. Nick himself in a 1v1 game. You might think that Christmas spirit would help Santa win, but nope – Jordan absolutely destroys him. Heck, I don’t think Santa even touches the ball!

Luckily, Santa don’t seem too bothered about it. Probably too busy thinking about getting his hands on some mince pies and soda (or milk, or brandy, or sherry, or whatever).

Flintstones Fruit Pebbles – Santa Barney

Celebrity appearances are becoming more and more popular in Christmas commercials but in my mind, none will ever top this commercial for Fruit Pebbles posing as the shortest episode of ‘The Flintstones’ ever.

Santa Claus pays Fred a visit as he’s chowing down on some Fruit Pebbles – weirdly, Santa is the most technologically advanced dude around because he has a sleigh and reindeers. Did reindeers even exist in prehistoric times? Does Santa have control over time and space?

Don’t overthink it, because Santa is just an incidental character. The real star is Barney Rubble, who decides to dress up as Santa Claus (or Santa Rockclaus or whatever they want to call him) to steal Fred’s Fruit Pebbles. That just ain’t on, especially at Christmas.

Luckily, Fred takes pity on Barney and the two enjoy a Christmas Eve bowl of Pebbles together. Awwww!

M&M’s – Red and Yellow meet Santa

This commercial poses a question that has troubled since the dawn of time; what happens when one fantasy character meets another? Do they exist in the same canon? Does the world explode?

The answer, as this commercial shows, is…erm, they faint. The M&M’s are preparing for Santa’s arrival, because apparently Santa’s list now includes anthropomorphic candy too – guess that explains why he’s missed my house these past couple of years. Cynical ol’ Red ain’t so sure Santa exists until he sees him in the living room and promptly faints.

However, it turns out that Father Christmas is a bit starstruck too, and promptly does the same. Yellow is left to pick up the pieces; if it was me, I’d have taken a picture of old beardy and proved to the world once and for all that he exists!

Feeling a bit more Christmassy yet? Good, ‘cos there’s plenty more Christmas fun to come on theAmerican Soda blog!
