Yes, I’ve been back on YouTube mooching about and I found this little gem from the late ’70s advertising Dr Pepper. The ad itself isn’t that special, though it’s all very happy and jolly, but take a close look at the main actor…
Recognise him? If you’re of a certain age you might – it’s the star of horror film An American Werewolf in London – David Naughton! So that’s what he did before getting all toothy and hairy…
Looking a lot happier in this commercial than he did in the film, not surprisingly. After all, who doesn’t love a Dr Pepper! We’ve got original Dr Pepper, Dr Pepper Cherry and diet versions of both in right now!
Yes, I’ve been trawling YouTube again! Came across this ace commerical for Cocoa Pebbles featuring, of course, The Flintstones. It’s from 1978. Any Americans remember it?
We’ve got Cocoa Pebbles in stock right now if you want to grab yourself a box and give them a go. Highly recommended if you’re after something different today.
As you may (or may not!) be aware, we recently started stocking Mentos in a variety of flavours not available in the UK. They’re proving quite popular, with cinnamon Mentos in high demand, closely followed by the strawberry Mentos and rainbow Mentos.
If you haven’t tried them yourself yet, I highly recommend the cinnamon ones, though if fruit is your thing then the others will hit the spot.
In the meantime, I remembered the Mentos and Diet Coke ‘experiements’ that have popped up all over YouTube and other video sites in the last few years and thought I’d grab the best of them to share with you here. Some are funny and some are genius, enjoy!
Soda & Mentos Art
Do NOT Try This At Home
BOOM!
World Record – 504 Mentos & Diet Coke Geysers!
Short, Sweet, But Effective
And finally…
That last one is by far the best in my opinion, what do you think?
Have you tried this for yourself and if so, how did it go? Grab some Mentos and give it a go – but BE CAREFUL!
This is it! The grand final of the American Soda Championship Challenge between myself, Dave Hughes, and my brother, Pete Hughes. The Hughes Brothers, if you will!
There were some muted cries of “FIX!” when we both made it to the final, but I can assure you that it was pure skill and intestinal fortitude that saw us both through.
So what was the final challenge to determine the American Soda Grand Champion 2011? A blind taste test! Peter and I had to guess what the product was using nothing but our sense of taste. Which of us knows our American sweets best? Watch the video to find out…
I can’t believe I failed to recognise the delicious Heath bar and 3 Musketeers Mint bar!! I think Peter has been spending a little extra time in the warehouse ‘testing’ our deliveries!
Ah, but seriously, congratulations to him, he did a cracking job throughout the competition and he’s a worthy winner of that, erm, beautiful Mello Yello trophy!
Now it’s your turn…
Do you think you can compete with the American Soda team in these kind of challenges? Well, here’s your opportunity to prove it! The challenge you undertake is up to you but if you want some ideas, take a look at the 100+ suggestions we got here or view the first round and semi final videos we did. Plenty of ideas there.
Video yourself doing the challenge, upload them to YouTube and then share the link with us on our Facebook page or in the comments here if you don’t have a Facebook account. At the end of the month we’ll pick our favourite three and post them up in a special blog post, giving you your 15 minutes of fame! The only caveat? It HAS to involve something you can buy from American Soda.
Go on…impress us with your skills and abilities.
Remember, you can view all the Championship Challenge videos (not to mention a few memorably funny bloopers and outtakes) on our own YouTube channel, AmericanSodaTV.
Yesterday we shared the Championship Challenge First Round videos with you – today it’s the semi finals, which pitted our marketing man Jordan against none other than Peter Hughes and me, Dave Hughes, against Stef from Admin. If you thought yesterday’s videos were funny, you haven’t seen anything yet! So on with the show… (And yes, Aydin somehow manages to get his face on camera AGAIN, despite losing yesterday!)
The Challenge: Who can fit the most sour sweets in their mouth at once?
The Winner: Peter Hughes
Poor Jordan. He didn’t handle that Sour Sweets Challenge well did he! Which gives us a Hughes Brothers final. Tune in to American Soda TV tomorrow to see who will be crowned the American Soda Champion!
The first round of the inaugural American Soda Champinship Challenge has taken place and what a competition it was. We recorded it all for your enjoyment. Here’s each challenge as it happened!
James Turner versus Jordan Pilkington
The Challenge: How many marshmallows can you fit in your mouth without chewing
The Winner: Jordan Pilkington
Peter Hughes versus Matt Pearson
The Challenge: Who can eat the most Saltine crackers in two minutes – with no drink!?
The Winner: Peter Hughes
Stef versus Kim Hunter
The Challenge: Who knows the American Soda product range best – under intense camera pressure!?
The Winner: Stef
Dave Hughes versus Aydin
The Challenge: Soda Roulette – who’s getting sprayed?
The Winner: Dave Hughes (yes, this one was ever so slightly disappointing!)
That was just Round One and I reckon it’s only going to get more intense in the semi finals. I am, of course, backing myself to win!
Here’s how we line up for the semis:
David Hughes versus Stef
Jordan Pilkington versus Pter Hughes
Tune in tomorrow to see whether I get through to the final and in the meantime let us know how you think we got on, what you thought was the best challenge…and (dare I ask?!) what you’ve found funniest so far!
Pretty soon you’ll have a chance to tell us who you think will prevail in our Championship Challenge – and you could win 10% off your next order with us!
Full details of this, including how you can vote, will be out very soon – you’re in for a treat, you really are! And hopefully a few laughs too.
In the meantime, here’s a couple of blooper videos we recorded recently when we were putting together the Championship Challenge.
Firstly, here’s Aydin cocking up his introduction to the live draw we did. Honestly, you’d think a sales manager would know what “Action!” means!
Secondly, here’s what happens when you get too close our beautiful trophy pictured above. Tut tut, Sharon, keep your mitts to yourself!
Keep your eye out for your chance to vote on who you think will win our challenge, coming soon! Remember, you could win a tidy 10% discount!
Are you old enough to remember the 80s? Remember the TV adverts back then? Here in the UK they were pretty bad, but in the States they were even worse! I found this little beauty on YouTube, advertising one of our most popular products, Cheetos.
As adverts go, this one is cheesier than most – which is pretty apt when you consider what it wants you to buy! And especially when it claims that Cheetos now have 40% more cheese! The nly thing issing from this commercial is Chester. That’s a shame, it would have topped off the cheesy factor quite nicely! Enjoy!
What cheesy commercials can you remember for American snacks or drinks? Share them with us in the comments (with a link if you can!).
