We had almost 200 entries. That’s 196 different reasons to be thankful. I’m not joking when I tell you that we here at American Soda have been utterly blown away by the response we’ve had from you.

thanksgiving

We did not expect so many of you to be so open and honest about your lives, sharing with us some pretty private stuff, but we are absolutely glad that you did. Reading the comments on this post has made me laugh, made me smile and even brought a tear to my eye. Before I announce who we eventually picked as our winner, I just want to share some of these with you. There were examples of people being thankful for overcoming illness, getting through seriously tough periods in their lives and finding love, joy and happiness. Incredible.

katie
I am Thankful for having the strength to move on with my life. After being a victim of domestic violence, I am thankful to the police for taking him out of mine and my childrens life. To put him in prison so I can live again. I am thankful for my mummy not suffering for too long with breast cancer and able to die with dignity. I am also thankful for my friends and family for all their support and meeting my partner and having a baby girl and getting married in March. Although I have money worries I am thankful for every day I get to spend with my family and friends because life is too short.

Linny
I could write a large sob story about my life at the moment and there are indeed many things I am and should be thankful for, yet today there is one main thing on my mind. I am thankful that I am alive. Without certain people looking out for me I would have taken my life. It seems odd that I should choose a candy website to confess this , as it is certainly something I have never managed to say out loud. Perhaps it is fitting, perhaps it is inappropriate but overall I feel a little better knowing I’ve put it out there. Thank you!

Mike Savage
I am thankful that at age 72 I can still walk, talk, care about other people, cry, forgive, help when I can, but most of all I can LAUGH at myself. Laughter is surely the most important benefit that we have been given. Without it the world would be totally without purpose.

Beverley
This year, I am thankful that I made my five year anniversary of being free of breast cancer. They tell me I am now officially “cured”. I think I will always be a little bit paranoid and have a little touch of hypochondria, but I have begun to relax more and reduce the OCD-style self examinations from once a day to once every couple of days. It’s been a long, long road and during chemo, I could barely eat anything, so if I win this, I will stock up on all my favourites and, in keeping with my new resolution to live life to the full, maybe try something new!

Ben Hughes
I am very thankful for every day at the moment as I had a heart/double lung transplant four and a half years ago and four months ago my lungs were classed as being in chronic rejection, so everyday at the moment is a bonus. I am also very thankful for the organs I receieved all that time ago. Just to anyone who reads this if you havent considered signing up to the organ donor register could you please consider it, from one american food lover to another. You really could be a “life-saver” cheers. Ben – Shrewsbury

Inspiring, and a good reminder to us all that as bad as things might seem, there’s always someone worse off than us and always something we have to be thankful for.

How do you pick a winner from so many entries from people with such stories to tell? Well, you have to look for something a little bit different. That’s why, after much deliberation, we chose this from Fraser as our winner:

I am thankful for…

*A* place to live
*M*y family and friends
*E*mployment, especially in these hard times.
*R*eeses Pieces & Root beer
*I*mported American goods from a certain soda website
*C*ats – Dexter and Pixie, two lovely furry friends
*A* cold winter’s morning promising Christmas is near
*N*ot having to go without food, water or comfort.
*S*aving up pennies to treat myself to Cheetos Crunchy snacks
*O*n the whole, having good health
*D*reams, some which I’ll always be trying to achieve, some that I already have.
*A*nd not forgetting the little boy or girl my wife is currently growing for me

It combines many of the sentiments from the more personal entries in an innovative way we just loved. If anything, this one just summed everything up for us. So thanks Fraser, and enjoy your £50 to spend with us.

Later this week, certainly in time for Thanksgiving, we’ll be giving a little something back to each and every one of you that shared your reasons with us, just to show YOU how thankful We are.

Cheers for now

After 112 entries, hours spent picking 10 finalists and over 1,000 votes we finally have our winner!

But before we announce who the lucky recipient of the £100 prize is, everyone at American Soda wants to say thank you to everyone who entered and / or voted in this competition. We all had a great time looking at your creative photos and each of us had our favourite that we were secretly rooting for!

In the end though, the winner was determined by you and your votes and that winner is…

An American Breakfast by Holly Davies
An American Breakfast (Lucky Charms & Pop Tarts)

Congratulations, Holly!

This was actually one of our favourites too. We liked the quality of the shot, the simplicity of it, the array of colours the composition and, above all, the fact that it made us want that breakfast! Oh, and the cute cat helped too. :)

Fantastic work. We assume Holly will be investing her £100 in more Lucky Charms and Pop Tarts!

Here’s how it panned out in the voting. It was pretty close at the top, as you can see.

An American Breakfast 19%
Sweet summer 18%
WANTED – Strawberry Fanta 17%
emperor smithy protecting american soda castle 14%
The beauty of American Soda 10%

American Soda Photo Contest

If you’ve liked us on Facebook then you’ll know we created a photo album on our Page that we’ve been rapidly filling with pictures you’ve been sending us, photos of your latest orders, your culinary creations using American Soda products and all manner of other pics.

Such has been the amazing response to the album (over 180 photos already!) I’d like to reward you all by giving you the chance to win £100 to spend with us, simply by sending us photos of your American Soda orders. We send out over 1,500 individual orders each week, so there should be plenty of you with stuff to photograph!

However, I don’t want just ANY photo…I want you to be creative, innovative, I want you to display imagination and / or artistic talent, I want to be blown away by your photos!

What do I mean by that? Well, rather than a photo of your order unpacked on the kitchen side, as good as they are to see, why not try an unusual location, a unique way of laying it all out or some really creative use of the camera with lighting, close ups, that sort of thing. We’re not after world class photography, just a bit of imagination.

After all, there’s £100 up for grabs. And to make it even more interesting, it won’t be the American Soda team and I that choose the winner – it’ll be you! Once we’ve chosen some of our favourites, we’ll let everyone vote on them to determine the overall winner! :)

To enter your photos and be in with a chance of winning £100 to spend with us, visit our Facebook Page now. Full terms and conditions are on there too. And don’t worry, if you’ve already had a photo included in the Facebook album, you can still enter it into this competition.

Here are a few of the pics from the Your Fantastic Photos album that caught my attention, just to give you an idea of what I’m after…

Baby Order

The clever inclusion of a small baby turned an ordinary American Soda order into a photograph to be proud of!

Close Up Order

An extreme close up of these Dark Chocolate M&Ms caught the eye, big time.

Stacked Order

Not only is this a beautifully taken photo, I loved the thought that went into stacking up the root beer.

Personalised Order

It's not always about the product...personalise your photos by including yourself!

So what do you think? Can you be creative enough to win £100?

I can’t wait to see all your entries, so get snapping and enter here. :)

Cheers for now!

Captain AmericaYes, it’s that time of year again, that six or seven week period when the kids are off school and you’re desparate to give them something to do to keep them occupied!

Well, here at American Soda we would like to help – and give you the chance to win £15 in the process!

To celebrate the premier of the new Captain America movie this Friday we thought it would be a fab idea for you to get your kids doing some colouring (coloring for the Americans of course!) in of the superhero. You can download three sketches from us for your little ones to display their artistic talents on right here:

You can even post your sketches back to us at:

Championship Challenge Final – and now it’s your turn!

The Blues Brothers

Peter and I? Not quite...

This is it! The grand final of the American Soda Championship Challenge between myself, Dave Hughes, and my brother, Pete Hughes. The Hughes Brothers, if you will! :)

There were some muted cries of “FIX!” when we both made it to the final, but I can assure you that it was pure skill and intestinal fortitude that saw us both through.

So what was the final challenge to determine the American Soda Grand Champion 2011? A blind taste test! Peter and I had to guess what the product was using nothing but our sense of taste. Which of us knows our American sweets best? Watch the video to find out…

I can’t believe I failed to recognise the delicious Heath bar and 3 Musketeers Mint bar!! I think Peter has been spending a little extra time in the warehouse ‘testing’ our deliveries!

Ah, but seriously, congratulations to him, he did a cracking job throughout the competition and he’s a worthy winner of that, erm, beautiful Mello Yello trophy!

Now it’s your turn…

Do you think you can compete with the American Soda team in these kind of challenges? Well, here’s your opportunity to prove it! The challenge you undertake is up to you but if you want some ideas, take a look at the 100+ suggestions we got here or view the first round and semi final videos we did. Plenty of ideas there.

Video yourself doing the challenge, upload them to YouTube and then share the link with us on our Facebook page or in the comments here if you don’t have a Facebook account. At the end of the month we’ll pick our favourite three and post them up in a special blog post, giving you your 15 minutes of fame! The only caveat? It HAS to involve something you can buy from American Soda.

Go on…impress us with your skills and abilities. :)

Remember, you can view all the Championship Challenge videos (not to mention a few memorably funny bloopers and outtakes) on our own YouTube channel, AmericanSodaTV.

Cheers for now

Yesterday we shared the Championship Challenge First Round videos with you – today it’s the semi finals, which pitted our marketing man Jordan against none other than Peter Hughes and me, Dave Hughes, against Stef from Admin. If you thought yesterday’s videos were funny, you haven’t seen anything yet! So on with the show… (And yes, Aydin somehow manages to get his face on camera AGAIN, despite losing yesterday!)

Dave Hughes versus Stef

The Challenge: Who can drink a can of American Soda through Red Vines the fastest?

The Winner: Dave Hughes (oh yeah!)

Jordan Pilkington versus Peter Hughes

The Challenge: Who can fit the most sour sweets in their mouth at once?

The Winner: Peter Hughes

Poor Jordan. He didn’t handle that Sour Sweets Challenge well did he! Which gives us a Hughes Brothers final. Tune in to American Soda TV tomorrow to see who will be crowned the American Soda Champion!

American Soda Championship Challenge – Round One

The first round of the inaugural American Soda Champinship Challenge has taken place and what a competition it was. We recorded it all for your enjoyment. Here’s each challenge as it happened!

James Turner versus Jordan Pilkington

The Challenge: How many marshmallows can you fit in your mouth without chewing

The Winner: Jordan Pilkington

Peter Hughes versus Matt Pearson

The Challenge: Who can eat the most Saltine crackers in two minutes – with no drink!?

The Winner: Peter Hughes

Stef versus Kim Hunter

The Challenge: Who knows the American Soda product range best – under intense camera pressure!?

The Winner: Stef

Dave Hughes versus Aydin

The Challenge: Soda Roulette – who’s getting sprayed?

The Winner: Dave Hughes (yes, this one was ever so slightly disappointing!)

That was just Round One and I reckon it’s only going to get more intense in the semi finals. I am, of course, backing myself to win!

Here’s how we line up for the semis:

David Hughes versus Stef
Jordan Pilkington versus Pter Hughes

Tune in tomorrow to see whether I get through to the final and in the meantime let us know how you think we got on, what you thought was the best challenge…and (dare I ask?!) what you’ve found funniest so far!

Cheers for now!
