Ash Cloud…Full story

Let me tell you Texas in April is perfect. The weather is great and the people are fantastic and welcoming!! There is so much to see and even more to do, I would recommend it to anybody.

I had been in Texas for 6 days when the Ash cloud burst, I immediately spoke with my flight operator who informed me that the flight home had been cancelled. Fortunatly I know people in Salt Lake so I was lucky enough that they could help me out.

I love the states but nothing beats home for me. I was quite concerned that I would never get home, reports were suggesting that the last time an Ash cloud burst it bellowed for 1 year!! Now I was getting worried. I spent most of my time on the internet looking for flights anywhere, maybe to Spain and I can drive??

Early one morning after much dejection over the limited flights home I received a call. There were two seats on a flight home……the flight was leaving Toronto Canada in 24 hours. This was my chance and I had to take it.

The route from Salt Lake to Canada was long but I had to take it. Salt lake to Ontario, Ontario to Dallas then finally Dallas to Toronto where I would ultimately make the flight home. Some of the check in times were tight but I HAD TO MAKE IT TO GET HOME!!

Salt Lake to Ontario….boarded, brilliant next few minutes the plane is not fit to fly, next flight in an hour!! That only left me 25 minutes to get the connecting flight. Had to risk it, what could I lose?? Well you probably guessed it that flight was delayed!! My chance was gone.

The three flights to Toronto were with Delta then American Airlines and American airlines. I spoke immediately with American airlines customer service who told me that I was not a customer of theres until Ontario!! Great, thanks!!

I chanced my arm with Delta. I explained to the now heroic lady my trouble and that I just wanted to get home, expecting very little in response as delta only had to get me to Ontario to fulfil there obligation to me, she asked me what gate I was in. I told her. She said that a flight to Toronto was currently boarding and that if I could get to gate 4A in 5 minutes then they could put me on that flight. Even better, for NO CHARGE!!

Now Delta Airlines did not need to help me but they did, they didn’t charge me, they didn’t see me as just a customer they actually helped me. I am still so grateful to the delta Airlines customer service people.

Disney & Drinks – Two New Websites We’ve Found!

Just a very quick post to point you in the direction of two brilliant websites we’ve discovered this week.

The first is a fantastic fizzy drinks review site called Dizzy Frinks. It features many of the US drinks we sell here at American Soda as well as a load of new ones we’ve yet to stock – and some we hadn’t even heard of! In addition to American drinks, Dizzy Frinks allows you to rate drinks from countries all over the world, including most of Europe, Brazil, Australia, India and even Iran!

Not only can you rate these drinks but you can add your own discoveries to the site once you’ve joined (which is completely free), as well as add photos and videos. We’ve spent ages on there looking through the weird and wonderful sodas from around the world. We’ve even added a few of our own (MUG Root Beer is currently featured on the homepage – see the pic below!) and some reviews.

Pete who runs the site is a lovely guy and we wish him well with the continued success of Dizzy Frinks. You can follow Dizzy Frinks on Facebook and Twitter too.

Dizzy Frinks

The second site we want to tell you about is a Disney fan site – who doesn’t like Disney movies, Disneyland, Disney World and all that, right? – where you can ‘meet up’ with fellow Disney fans, share photos, share videos, share information. Yes, it’s about sharing – it’s more of a social media experience than a website! After all, there are a lot of dedicated Disney forums out there, but DisCOT, for that is its name, does it differently.

Once you’ve signed up (again, completely free) you can begin sharing updates with other Disney fans and uploading your Disney-related photos and videos – from your latest trip to Disney World for example – very similarly to Facebook and Twitter. People can add comments on your updates and you can comment on others updates, photos and videos and get to know them that way.

One great feature is the ability to create and join groups – we have our own American Soda DisCOT group here – creating communities within the Disney community. There’s loads to discover, including Disney podcasts, Disney theme park groups, other theme park groups, even a Disney Tattoo group! It’s a great place to find out about things if you’re planning a trip or after a particular bit of Disney merchandise, anything like that. The people we’ve met so far on there are all really friendly and will be happy to help you out.

If you’re a fan of Disney and want to chat to like-minded people, this is the place to do it, without a doubt. Go take a look.

Discot

I reckon we’ll make this sharing of new sites a bit of a semi-regular feature so if there’s one you think we’d like, let us know, we’ll be happy to check it out. In the meantime, tell us what you think of these sites once you’ve had a look.

Behind the scenes we’re always working hard to provide you with a better service, whether that’s over the phone or online via our website, Facebook or Twitter.

That’s why I’m very excited to announce a few new features on the American Soda site. Some of you may have spotted these already but for those of you who haven’t, here’s a nice round up.

Featured Products

You can find our new Featured page from the tab at the top right of the site. Here is where I’ll be putting and products of interest, products on offer and that sort of thing.

Featured Products Banner

To kick off, I’ve put 10 products on the page AT LESS THAN HALF PRICE! They include:

Maseca Instant Corn Masa Flour

Mississippi Belle Creamy Peanut Butter

Mounds Dark Chocolate Bar

Warheads Sour Chewy Cubes

Gatorade Fruit Punch G2 Low Cal

Libby’s Pumpkin Pie Filling (Check out these great pumpkin pie recipes, by the way!)

Tabasco Green Pepper Sauce

French’s French Fried Onions

Vlasic Kosher Dill Baby Wholes

Keebler Ready Pie Crust Chocolate

Snap them up fast, at 50% off, they won’t last long!

Upload Your Video Reviews

Another new – and I think brilliant – feature is that we’ve given you the ability to upload your reviews of our products from YouTube so they appear on the American Soda site.

Let’s say you record a short review of your favourite root beer and share it on YouTube. That’s very nice and we appreciate it – but we’like it even better if that review appeared on the product page itself here on American Soda. To make that happen all you have to do is grab the YouTube URL and visit our Video Review page to pupload it. Complete the simple form and that’s it! Once the video is reviewed by our staff it will appear on the site. How cool is that? :)

New Products

Pop over to our homepage and scroll to the bottom and you’ll see a blue tab labelled “Our New Products” which, when you click it, drops down to show you all the latest stuff we have in. We haven’t properly updated this yet, but we will and it’ll be a nice feature for you to find all new products.

Facebook ‘Like’ Button

This one I really hope you guys all use as much as possible. When you’re placing an order or browsing the site and come across something you really like you can share it with our friends simply by clicking the Like button we’ve added to EVERY product page. Of course, we’ve all seen the Like button on nearly every site now, so you know what to do with it!

So what do you think of these new features? Let me know in the comments. In the meantime, have a great weekend everybody.

Introducing…Easy S’mores!

Let’s face it, when it comes to American snack traditions we’re as intrigued about them as they are about our bangers and mash, but the American version is usually a yummy, sweet and sticky dish…and s’mores are no exception!

Traditional methods call for toasting your marshmallow over a raging campfire, while your shorts and t-shirt clad friends sing ‘Kumbaya’ by the guitar. But let’s not pretend that our rain wouldn’t ruin that setting… so instead, cheat and enjoy anyway.

S'Mores IngredientsAll you need are some Nabisco Honey Maid Grahams, a bar of Hershey’s chocolate (by the way – we now have the much anticipated Hershey’s Milk Chocolate GIANT Bar in stock!) and some yummy yummy Marshmallow Fluff. Oh, and a microwave to make the magic happen.

Take one of the long crackers and carefully snap into half. You can then load your chocolate up on each piece and place in the microwave. Two pieces of Hershey’s is enough per half. Remember to use a microwavable plate!

Once the chocolate is melted (30 seconds – 1 minute plus depending on your microwave ) you can then start to construct the s’more.

Place a good spoonful of Marshmallow Fluff on one of the chocolate laden crackers and then top the Fluff with the other cracker.

What you will have is something that will make you want more. In fact, make a few in the first place so you dont have to wait any longer to enjoy another s’more.

Easy S'Mores

You can also of course use the traditional ingredients, like Little Becky Marshmallows, if you’re having a bbq or you have a fancy fire pit, but please be careful!

You can also get creative with s’mores – why not try them with ice cream or atop of one of our Cake Mixes to make an extra special s’mores cake! Dont forget the Hershey’s Chocolate Syrup to really make it worthwhile.

Enjoy and send us your s’mores creation pics and ideas!!

I want to start by saying thank you to everyone who entered our Wills & Kate Cake Competition, it was really good fun looking at all your original and stunning entries. It was NOT fun trying to pick a winner!

I agonised over several entries before finally picking a winner and to be honest, I was so torn between two of the entries I’ve decided to give a runners up prize too!

Congratulations, then, to Grainne Halligan who made the effort to bake this giant chocolate cupcake, complete with Betty Crocker chocolate frosting, marshmallows, M&Ms Pretzel and Hershey’s chocolate syrup.

Cake Competition Runner Up

It looks delicious, I love the fact it has our logo on it and it came SO close to winning the competition outright. For her sterling effort, Grainne wins £20 to spend on anything she likes from our online store. Congratulations, Grainne!

And the winner is…

Just pipping Grainne to the top prize of our Complete Cake Making Kit is Clare Law with her American Soda London Bus Tour cake.

I was completely blown away by the idea of having an open top London bus as a royal wedding cake and there are some really nice touches to her design. Ok, it may not be the best drawing in the world (as Clare freely admits!) but in terms of originality, it wins hands down for me. Check it out:

Cake Competition Winner

The mash up of British and American icons (the bus, the Statue of Liberty, the happy couple and even President Abraham Lincoln!) was inspired, as was the use of various American Soda products such as Oreo Cookies, a Hershey’s chocolate bar and various American drinks including Welch’s Grape Soda and root beer. Oh, and the fact that she’s “26 and 3/4″ just cracked me up too!

Clare wins our Complete Cake Making Kit, comprising:

Complete Cake Making KitDuncan Hines Classic White Cake Mix

Betty Crocker Whipped Fluffy White Frosting

Nestle Premier White Morsels

Nestle Milk Chocolate Morsels

Duncan Hines Strawberry Supreme Cake Mix 517g

Betty Crocker Whipped Whipped Cream Frosting (340g)

Hershey’s Semi Sweet Chocolate Chips

Duncan Hines Confetti Cake/Cupcake mix (517g)

Betty Crocker Cup Cake Icing Petal Pink

Betty Crocker Cup Cake Icing-Buttercup Yellow

Keebler Graham Pie Crust (6oz)

Keebler Ready Pie Crust Chocolate (6oz/170g)

Jell-o Oreo Cookies and Creme Filling

Jell-o Lemon Instant Pudding & Pie Filling

Well done, Clare! And once again, a big thank you to everyone who entered. Which were your favourites and why?

Keep an eye out for our next competition on Facebook and remember, most months we run a #win50 competition on Twitter, giving you the chance to win £50 to spend on anything you like from us – it’s usually the last Friday of every month, so look for that too.

Cheers
